EARTHQUAKES: JANUARY THROUGH DECEMBER 1990 There were 102 earthquakes (0.1 le M le 4.0) located within the SEUSSN monitoring area during 1990. Thirteen of those, two in Kentucky (17 August 21:01, mb(Lg)= 4.0, MD= 3.5, MMI= V; 8 September 00:03, mb(Lg)= 3.3, MMI= V), two in Maryland (13 January 20:47, mb(Lg)= 2.5, MD= 2.6, MMI= V; 4 April 16:15, MD= 1.7, felt), eight in South Carolina (7 January 16:13, MD= 2.1, MMI= III; 7 February 07:41, mb(Lg)= 2.9, MD= 2.7, MMI= III; 18 February 12:09, MD= 2.1, MMI= III; 11 May 18:23, MD= 2.6, MMI= III; 2 June 02:57, MD= 2.5, MMI= III; 2 June 17:39, MD= 1.6, MMI= III; 18 June 10:03, MD= 2.6, MMI= III; 13 November 15:22, mb(Lg)= 3.5, MD= 3.2, MMI= V), and one in Virginia (3 January 04:25, MD= 2.0, MMI= III) were felt. Southeastern Tennessee continues to report the greatest number of earthquakes within the region. Earthquakes reported include 3 in Alabama, 6 in Kentucky, 46 in Tennessee, 8 in Georgia, 2 in Maryland, 15 in North Carolina, 15 in South Carolina, and 7 in Virginia. Figures 1 and 2 are epicenter maps of tectonic earthquakes (M ge 0) located within the region during the report period. Figures 3 and 4 are cumulative epicenter maps for the 13.5 year period from July 1977 through December 1990 (SEUSSN Bulletins 1 through 25). The SEUSSN earthquake statistics section includes general catalog statistics (page 7), focal depth distribution plots (page 8), magnitude distribution plots (page 9), estimates of catalog completeness (page 9), a magnitude recurrence relation (page 10), and cumulative strain factor history plots (page 11). The largest earthquake for the report period was an mb(Lg)= 4.0 event (17 August 21:01) that was felt (MMI= V) at Bledsoe, Dizney and Jeff, Kentucky. There were three earthquakes associated with the Lake Jocassee Reservoir (M ge 2) in South Carolina reported for 1990. The total number of stations operating during 1990 was 118 (network attrition 6%). However, by the end of 1990, 15 additional stations had been shut down, bringing the total network attrition to 18%. The SEUSSN monitoring area is considered to include all of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia (south of latitude 37.72 deg N), Maryland, and Delaware; and includes Tennessee and Kentucky - east of longitude 87 degrees West (see outlined area in the SEUSSN stations map). AZM: Azimuthal angle from epicenter to station as measured from north (in deg), DEP: Focal depth estimate (in km); FXD indicates that the depth was held fixed during the epicentral determination, DIST(KM) Epicentral distance (in km) between the epicenter and a station, ERROR ELLIPSE: Semi-axes, expressed as lengths (km) and azimuths (deg), of the vertical projection of the error ellipsoid (Lahr, 1980). Horizontal axes are expressed as the semi-major axis (ERHMAX), it's azimuth (AZ), and the semi-minor axis (ERHMIN). The vertical axis (ERZ) is the largest vertical deviation of the error ellipsoid from the hypocenter. A quality measure (Q) for the ellipsoid based on the length of the largest semi-axis (ERHMAX, ERHMIN, or ERZ) may also be supplied. For this Bulletin the following statistics apply for error estimates: CERI, TVA, and VTSO: Error ellipse projected semi-axes from HYPOELLIPSE corresponding to a chi-square statistic (68%) with one degree of freedom, GIT: Error ellipse projected semi-axes from LOCA, and USC: Standard error estimates from HYPO71.
