EARTHQUAKES: JULY THROUGH DECEMBER 1985 There were 27 earthquakes (0.0 le M le 3.3) located within the SEUSSN monitoring area during the last six months of 1985. Of those, two in Delaware (10 and 20 October, MDB = 1.9 and 1.7, respectively), two in Tennessee (12 July, MDB = 3.0; 22 December, MDB = 3.3), and one in Virginia (21 December, mb(Lg) = 2.6) were felt. Southeastern Tennessee continues to have the highest level of seismic activity within the region (19 earthquakes). Earthquakes reported include two in Delaware, one in Georgia, one in South Carolina, 20 in Tennessee and three in Virginia. Figures 1 and 2 are epicenter maps of tectonic events (M ge 0) located within the region during the report period. Figures 3 and 4 are cumulative epicenter maps for the 8.5 year period from July 1977 through December 1985 (SEUSSN Bulletins 1 through 17). Report period and cumulative earthquake catalog statistics are presented on page 10. Figure 5 is a plot of focal depth distributions for both the report period and for the cumulative earthquake catalog. The largest earthquake for the report period was a MDB = 3.3 event (22 December) that was felt in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. At least five aftershocks to this event were detected. Also of some interest is a MDB = 3.0 earthquake (12 July) that was felt at Hixon, Tennessee, and the Sequoyah Nuclear Plant. Susan Rhea of the U.S. Geological Survey has informed the editors that for the South Carolina Seismic Network, they use a duration magnitude of the form: MDL = -0.87 + 2.0 log (D) + 0.0035 X where D is the signal duration from onset of the P arrival to the time at which the signal is twice the background level, and X is the epicentral distance in kilometers. This is the same formula listed in Lee and Stewart (1981, page 156) where MDL is an estimate of Richter's ML magnitude. Jill Rawlins of the USC has informed the editors that they use a coda length/duration magnitude based on ML. The Tennessee Earthquake Information Center, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory use a duration magnitude of the form: MDB = -3.45 + 2.85 log (D) where D is signal duration measured from the P-wave arrival time to the time when the signal returns to background. This magnitude should be roughly equivalent to mb(Lg) for earthquakes of magnitude less than 5 (or of signal duration less than about 1000 sec). Ken Woodruff of the Delaware Geological Survey reports that they also use a duration magnitude that roughly approximates mb where duration is measured from the onset of the P-wave to the point where the signal returns to background level. Also given is a detailed listing of agencies or groups (and their letter codes) that supply information to this Bulletin. Appendix B is an alphabetical listing of the 147 stations of the Southeastern United States Seismic Network (SEUSSN) operating during the period from July through December, 1985 (network changes are found at the end of the listing). Bulletin 11 contained a complete Station Information Appendix that gave detailed information on the operators, type of seismographs, response characteristics, recording formats, etc. Subsequent bulletins have presented only changes in the network. Figure 6 is a geographic map showing the SEUSSN. The SEUSSN monitoring area is considered to include all of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia (south of latitude 37.72 deg N), Maryland, and Delaware; and includes Tennessee and Kentucky - east of longitude 87 degrees West (see outlined area in Figure 6). Figures 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 show individual networks (with station identification codes) operated by major member agencies or groups of the SEUSSN. Appendix C gives Errata and Addenda as necessary to correct/update previous Bulletins. Appendix D gives a brief description of the method and results of network calibration of the digital recording system at the VTSO. Appendix E contains results from a study of traveltime residuals for events within the VTSO seismic network. Appendix A. Definitions and Operator Listing Some entries in this Bulletin that might require definition are: AZM: Azimuthal angle from epicenter to station as measured from north (in deg), DEP: Focal depth estimate (in km); FXD indicates that the depth was held fixed during the epicentral determination, DIST (KM): Epicentral distance (in km) between the epicenter and a station, ERROR ELLIPSE: Semi-axes, expressed as lengths (km) and azimuths (deg), of the vertical projection of the error ellipsoid (Lahr, 1980). Horizontal axes are expressed as the semi-major axis (ERHMAX), it's azimuth (AZ), and the semi-minor axis (ERHMIN). The vertical axis (ERZ) is the largest vertical deviation of the error ellipsoid from the hypocenter. A quality measure (Q) for the ellipsoid based on the length of the largest semi-axis (ERHMAX, ERHMIN, or ERZ) may also be supplied, GAP: The largest azimuthal separation (in deg) between recording stations, LOCA: Computer hypocenter location program developed at the Georgia Institute of Technology, MBN or mb(Lg): Body wave magnitude determination using Nuttli's formulas for the Lg phase (Nuttli, 1973), MDB, MDL, MD: Duration/coda length magnitude that approximates either the mb, ML, or an unknown magnitude scale, respectively; see SEUSSN Bulletin 17, page 1, or contact the agency or group making the estimate for details on their specific procedure, MEUS: Body wave magnitude determination using Evernden's formulas for the Pn phase (Evernden, 1967), ML: Local magnitude; contact the agency or group making the estimate for details on their specific procedure, NO: Number of P, S, and S-P readings used in locating the event, PHASE: Phase descriptions for either P or S waves, or S-P times. Included under this heading may also be the descriptors; 'i' for an impulsive arrival or 'e' for an emergent arrival. Preliminary first motions may also be given for P wave polarities. These include; 'u', 'c', or '+' for a compressional first arrival, and 'd' or '-' for a dilatational first arrival. Q: Solution quality of the hypocenter (the average of the SQD quality measures; Lee and Lahr, 1974), RES: Arrival time residual (the difference between the observed and the calculated arrival time, in seconds). An "X" following the value of the arrival time residual means that the arrival time was not used to compute the location of that event, RMS: Root-mean-square of the weighted arrival time residuals (in sec), S-P: Difference between the S and P wave arrival times (in sec), SQD: Measures of the statistical quality of the solution (S), and of the distribution of stations (D) around the hypocenter (Lee and Lahr, 1974), *XXXX: Code indicating the agency or group that made the hypocentral/magnitude determination; a listing of agencies and groups that operate seismographs in the SEUSSN and/or who supply information to this BULLETIN follows. Errata and Addenda Jill Rawlins of USC has informed the editors that the tectonic event of 790507 10:00 (see SEUSSN Bulletin 14A) should be associated with activity near the Monticello Reservoir in South Carolina.
