EARTHQUAKES: JANUARY THROUGH JUNE 1985 There were 36 earthquakes (0.0 le M le 3.6) located within the SEUSSN monitoring area during the first six months of 1985. Of those, 1 in North Carolina (19 March, MD = 2.1), 1 in South Carolina (9 June, Mb(Lg) = 2.7, MMI = III; Talwani and others, 1985), and 1 in Virginia (10 June, Mb(Lg) = 3.2 , MMI = IV) were felt events. Overall the activity was distributed throughout the region with 2 in Alabama, 7 in North Carolina, 2 in South Carolina, 21 in Tennessee, 3 in Virginia, and 1 in West Virginia. Figures 1 and 2 are epicenter maps of those events. Figures 3 and 4 are cumulative epicenter maps for the 8 year period from July 1977 through June 1985 (SEUSSN Bulletins 1 through 16). Report period and cumulative earthquake statistics are presented on page 10. Figure 5 is a plot of focal depth distributions for both the report period and for the cumulative earthquake catalog. Southeastern Tennessee continues to be the most seismically active area within the region in terms of numbers of shocks (approximately 25). The largest shock for that area for the report period was MD = 2.5 and was not felt. The largest earthquake for the report period was a MD = 3.6 event in western Virginia (19 June). Telephone inquiries yielded no felt informaton. Calls to local authorities indicated no mining or construction operations that might be responsible. Also, the size and the distance over which the event was recorded would seem to indicate that it is an earthquake (VTSO). Time of day, seismic signal character, and the existence of numerous regional mining operations would seem to indicate that the event is probably a blast (TEIC and NEIC). Twenty reservoir related earthquakes (M ge 1.0) were also reported in South Carolina. Of these 17 were located in the vicinity of the Monticello Reservoir, and 3 were located near Lake Jocassee. GIT has made a change in the computation of magnitudes (personal communication, Professor L. T. Long, 1985). As of January 1985, all GIT magnitudes are Mb based on signal duration as derived for the southeastern United States. Prior to this time, all magnitudes were Mb based on signal duration derived for the northeastern United States. Definitions and Operator Listing Some entries in this Bulletin that might require definition are: AZM: Azimuthal angle from epicenter to station as measured from north (in deg), DEP: Focal depth estimate (in km); FXD indicates that the depth was held fixed during the epicentral determination, DIST (KM): Epicentral distance (in km) between the epicenter and a station, ERROR ELLIPSE: Semi-axes, expressed as lengths (km) and azimuths (deg), of the vertical projection of the error ellipsoid (Lahr, 1980). Horizontal axes are expressed as the semi-major axis (ERHMAX), it's azimuth (AZ), and the semi-minor axis (ERHMIN). The vertical axis (ERZ) is the largest vertical deviation of the error ellipsoid from the hypocenter.
