Virginia Tech Seismic Network 67 SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES SEISMICITY FROM JULY THROUGH DECEMBER 1984 There were 49 earthquakes (0.0 le M le 4.2) located within the SEUSSN monitoring area during the last six months of 1984. Of those, 1 in Virginia (17 August, Mb(Lg) = 4.2 , MMI = V), 1 in Georgia (9 October, Mb(Lg) = 4.0 , MMI = VI), and 1 in North Carolina (22 October, Mb(Lg) = 3.2 , MMI = V) were felt events. The earthquake in central Virginia and the one in northwest Georgia are the second and third largest magnitude events (respectively) to have occurred within the SEUSSN since network monitoring began in July 1977. Overall the activity was distributed throughout the region with 5 in Alabama, 4 in Georgia, 2 in Kentucky, 6 in North Carolina, 1 in South Carolina, 23 in Tennessee, 6 in Virginia, and 2 in West Virginia. Figures 1 and 2 are epicenter maps of those events. Figures 3 and 4 are cumulative epicenter maps for the 7.5 year period from July 1977 through December 1984 (SEUSSN BULLETINS 1 through 15). Southeastern Tennessee continues to be the most seismically active area within the region in terms of numbers of shocks. The largest shock for that area had a magnitude of 3.1 which was not felt. Sixteen earthquakes (M ge 1.0) in the vicinity of the Monticello Reservoir, South Carolina, 1 earthquake (M = 0.0) near the Clark Hill Reservoir, South Carolina, and 1 blast in Virginia are also reported in this BULLETIN. Introduced in this BULLETIN is a section called SEUSSN Earthquake Statistics. In addition to numerical data (e.g., total number of earthquakes, number of earthquakes with M ge 2.5, etc.), the distribution of focal depths (ERZ le 5.0 km) is also presented for both the report period and the entire 7.5 year catalog. Bulletin 14A has been completed and both hard copy and magnetic tape versions are available (when requesting a tape version, please include a blank 9-track computer tape). That Bulletin contains an event listing of all seismic events reported in SEUSSN Bulletins 1 through 14, covering the period from July 1977 through June 1984. The listing gives hypocentral, size, and error parameters for 1060 events and supersedes similar listings provided in Bulletins 10A and 12A.
