Virginia Tech Seismic Network 45 MAILING LIST 48 SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES SEISMICITY FROM JANUARY THROUGH JUNE 1984 There were 34 earthquakes (0.0 le M le 3.6) located within the SEUSSN monitoring area during the first six months of 1984. Of those, 2 in Tennessee (MMI: V, IV) and 1 in Alabama (MMI: V) were felt events. Overall the activity was distributed throughout the region with 2 in Alabama, 8 in Georgia, 1 in North Carolina, 3 in South Carolina, 16 in Tennessee, 2 in Virginia, and 2 in West Virginia. Figures 1 and 2 are epicenter maps of those events. Figures 3 and 4 are cumulative epicenter maps for the 7 year period from July 1977 through June 1984 (SEUSSN Bulletins 1 through 14). Southeastern Tennessee continues to be the most seismically active area within the region, both in terms of numbers and sizes of shocks. This level of activity began during the first half of 1982. For the 2> year period since then, the southeastern part of Tennessee has maintained continuously its "most active area" status. Specifically, for events of magnitude 0.0 or greater, it has exhibited 37% of the total number of events reported (84/226) and 32% of the felt events (6/19). The Tennessee felt earthquakes had magnitudes between 3.0 and 3.6. APPENDICES Appendix A1 is an alphabetical listing of the 136 stations of the Southeastern United States Seismic Network (SEUSSN) operating during the period from January through June, 1984. Figure 5 is a geographic map showing the SEUSSN listed in Appendix A1. The SEUSSN network monitoring area is considered to include all of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia (south of latitude 37.72 deg. N), Maryland, and Delaware; and includes Tennessee and Kentucky - east of longitude 87 deg. W (see outlined area in Figure 5).
