The organizations supplying data for this Bulletin are the Baptist College at Charleston, Geological Survey of Alabama, Carolina Power and Light Company, the E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company, Inc. (Savannah River Laboratory), University of Florida, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia Southwestern College, University of Kentucky, Memphis State University (Tennessee Earthquake Information Center), Tennessee Valley Authority, University of South Carolina, United States Geological Survey, Virginia Division of Mineral Resources, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Seismological Observatory), Washington and Lee University, and West Virginia University. Appendix A1 is an alphabetical listing of the 127 stations of the Southeastern United States Seismic Network (SEUSSN) operating during the period from July through December, 1983. Figure 1 is a geographic map showing the SEUSSN listed in Appendix A1. The SEUSSN network monitoring area is considered to include all of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia (south of latitude 37.72 degrees N), Maryland, and Delaware; and includes Tennessee and Kentucky - east of longitude 87 degrees W (see outlined area in Figure 1). Figures 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 show individual networks (with station identification codes) operated by major member agencies or groups of the SEUSSN. Appendix A2 is a discussion of changes, additions, and deletions to the SEUSSN. Bulletin 11 contained a complete Station Information Appendix that gave detailed information on the operators, type of seismographs, response characteristics, recording formats, etc. Subsequent bulletins have presented only network changes. Appendix B1 is a listing of the hypocentral parameters, magnitude estimates, and phase arrival times for earthquakes that occurred in the southeastern United States during the report period. Appendix B2 is a listing of events (with arrival times) recorded during the report period that could not be reliably located with the available data. Appendix C is a listing of additional arrival time data from the Savannah River Plant Seismic Network for events that occurred during the period from July 1982 through December 1983. Appendix D is a short description of Bulletin 12A; Hypocenter Listing from Southeastern U. S. Seismic Network Bulletins No. 1 - 12 (July, 1977 to July, 1983). FIGURE 1. SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES SEISMICITY There were 60 earthquakes (0.0 le M le 3.5) located by SEUSSN in the southeastern United States during the last six months of 1983. Of those, 3 in Kentucky and 1 each in South Carolina and Tennessee were felt events. The activity was well distributed throughout the region with 1 in Alabama, 7 in Georgia, 5 in Kentucky, 9 in North Carolina, 3 in South Carolina, 23 in Tennessee, 6 in Virginia, and 6 in West Virginia. Figures 7A and 7B are epicenter maps of those events. Of particular interest is a lineation of events in the area around Greenback, Tennessee (eastern Tennessee). This lineation has been noted previously in the TEIC quarterly report for October - December, 1983 (Vol. IV, No. 4), and also in TEIC Special Report No. 9 by Reinbold and Cornwell (1983). In the latter, the lineation was composed of events located within the SARSN network that occurred from July, 1981 to December, 1982. Figure 7A clearly shows that over 60 km of this lineation was apparently active during the last six months of 1983. Figures 8A and 8B are cumulative epicenter maps for the 6> year period from July 1977 through December 1983. These figures have changed substantially from those presented in Bulletin 12 due mostly to the removal of blasts and reservoir induced earthquakes from the cumulative tectonic event listing (see Appendix D). Bulletin 12A has been completed and both hard copy and magnetic tape versions are available. That Bulletin contains an event listing of 963 seismic events as reported in Bulletins 1 through 12 covering the period from July 1977 through June 1983 (see Appendix D for more details). FIGURE 7A. ERRATA AND ADDENDA In Bulletin 10 two Tennessee events (5 May 1982; 15:28 UCT, and 17 June 1982; 21:09 UCT) were listed as earthquakes. In Bulletin 11 (in the Errata and Addenda section) it was noted that TEIC thought the events could be blasts. TEIC has since reported that they now believe the events are genuine tectonic earthquakes. In Bulletin 12A a Monticello Reservoir event (13 April 1982; 9:25 UCT) was listed as first being reported in Bulletin 13 (this report). Actually the event was originally reported in Bulletin 10 (no magnitude was given). In the relocation and revision of events for Bulletin 12A, several new events were found that have now been added to the SEUSSN listing (see Appendix D). Added to the tectonic listing are the following new events; Added to the blast listing are the following new events; In the case of the tectonic event listing, most of the new events are aftershocks to the Mb(Lg) = 5.2 (MMI VII) Sharpsburg, Kentucky, earthquake of 27 July 1980 (Herrmann and others, 1981). The listing includes only those events with a reported magnitude greater than or equal to zero. The event listing in Bulletin 12A replaces that presented in Bulletin 10A. Events in the listing have been divided into three groups. TECTONIC. This group consists of 281 earthquakes not associated with activity near reservoirs. An epicenter map for this group of events is shown in Figure D1. This list was supplemented by the addition of events from the aftershock sequence to the Mb(Lg) = 5.2 (MMI VII) Sharpsburg, Kentucky, earthquake of 27 July 1980 (Herrmann and others, 1981). RESERVOIR. This group consists of 529 earthquakes, mostly in South Carolina and Georgia, located at or near reservoirs. Therefore, these events are believed to be reservoir induced. An epicenter map for this group of events is shown in Figure D2. BLAST. This group contains 153 events considered to be mostly blasts. An epicenter map for this group of events is shown in Figure D3. Event listings in Bulletin 12A have been supplemented with more individual event information than was originally reported in Bulletin 10A. New information includes such common locational parameters as the number of phase arrival times used to compute the location, the distance from the epicenter to the closest recording station, the largest azimuthal gap in the recording stations, and the RMS of the residuals of the arrival time data. This 'new' SEUSSN format is generally patterned after the hypocenter output line of such locational programs as HYPO71 and HYPOELLIPSE. Copies of Bulletin 12A (in either hard copy or magnetic tape form) are available through the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory.
