TVA Epicenter Calculation for the 22:02 UTC Tennessee Earthquake 72 Mailing List 73 INTRODUCTION This report is the twelfth semi-annual BULLETIN OF SEISMICITY OF THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES. It covers the period January through June, 1983. The organizations supplying data for this BULLETIN are the University of Florida, Geological Survey of Alabama, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia Southwestern College, Memphis State University (Tennessee Earthquake Information Center), Tennessee Valley Authority, United States Geological Survey, Virginia Division of Mineral Resources, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Seismological Observatory), Washington and Lee University and West Virginia University. Table 1 is a listing, by state, of the 117 stations operating during the period January-June, 1983. The format of the information included in the table is as follows: 1. Three or four letter station code, 2. Station latitude in decimal degrees, north, 3. Station longitude in decimal degrees, west, 4. Station elevation, meters, 5. Geographic name of station, 6. Station operator. Figure 1 is a geographic map of the entire Southeastern United States Seismic Network (SEUSSN). Figures 2, 3, 4 and 5 show the South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama-Georgia and Tennessee-North Carolina Networks, respectively. Each of those networks has station spacings too small to be shown clearly on Figure 1. Table 2 is a listing of the hypocentral parameters, phase arrival times and magnitude estimates for earthquakes that occurred in the southeastern United States during the report period. Most items in the listing are self-explanatory and all times are Coordinated Universal Time. Some entries that might require definition are: AZM= Epicenter-to-station azimuth in degrees, DEP= Focal depth estimate in km; FXD indicates that the depth was held fixed during the epicentral determination, DIST= Epicentral distance in degrees (deg) or kilometers (km), DOALL= Computer hypocenter location program developed at the Georgia Institute of Technology (see also ERROR ELLIPSE), ERROR ELLIPSE= Semi-axes, expressed as lengths (km) and azimuths (deg), of the surface and vertical projection of the error ellipsoid (HYPOELLIPSE; J. C. Lahr, USGS Open File Report 80-59). Horizontal axes are expressed as the semi-major axis (ERHMAX), it's azimuth (AZ), and the semi-minor axis (ERHMIN). The vertical axis (ERZ) is the largest vertical deviation of the error ellipsoid from the hypocenter. GAP= The largest sector, in degrees, where there were no observing stations (HYPO71), MBN= Body wave magnitude determination using Nuttli's formulas for the Lg phase, MEUS= Body wave magnitude determination using Evernden's formula for the Pn phase, ML= Local magnitude; contact agency or group making the estimate for details on their specific procedure, MLD= Local magnitude determined from duration of vibrations, MSZ= Surface wave magnitude determined from the long period vertical seismogram, PH= Number of phases used in the hypocenter determination, Q= Solution quality of error ellipsoid based on length of largest semi-axis (HYPOELLIPSE), or Solution quality of the hypocenter (HYPO71), RES= P wave residual in seconds; observed arrival time - calculated arrival time, RMS= Root mean square error of time residuals in sec (HYPO71), S-P= Arrival time of S-wave minus arrival time of P-wave in seconds, SQD= Solution and station distribution quality as defined in HYPO71, *XXXX= Agency or group that made the hypocentral determination. BULLETIN Number 11 contained a complete Station Information Appendix that gave detailed information on the operators, type of seismographs, response characteristics, recording formats, etc. This BULLETIN will not repeat that information, but will present in Appendix B only changes, additions and deletions. SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES SEISMICITY Figures 6A and 6B are epicenter maps for the report period, January 1 - June 30, 1983, while Figures 7A, 7B and 7C are cumulative epicenter maps for the 6 year period from July 1, 1977, through June 30, 1983. There were 46 earthquakes (-0.5 _ M _ 3.5) located by SEUSSN in the southeastern United States during the first six months of 1983. Of those, 1 in Georgia and 1 in North Carolina were felt events. The activity was well distributed throughout the region: 3 in Alabama, 4 in Georgia, 1 in North Carolina, 7 in Virginia, 5 in South Carolina, 3 in Mississippi, 3 in West Virginia and 20 in Tennessee. Recently we have become aware that many of the earthquakes listed in previous BULLETINS as having epicenters in northwestern South Carolina may indeed be blasts. Dr. Pradeep Talwani and his co-workers at the University of South Carolina are providing a special study directed toward the resolution of this event classification problem. We expect to be able to provide a revised cumulative event listing in the near future. Specifically, our plans are to issue a special six-year listing as BULLETIN 12A. That BULLETIN will be culled of probable blasts and all other errors insofar as possible and would be available in both hard-copy and magnetic tape formats.
